Limitations

  • Equipment complexity – GMAW equipment is more complex, less portable, and requires more routine maintenance than SMAW or GTAW .
  • Outdoor limitations – Wind can disperse the shielding gas, leading to weld porosity. Wind screens or enclosed areas may be necessary .

Metal Transfer Modes

GMAW can operate in four distinct modes of metal transfer, each suited for different applications :

Shielding Gases

The choice of shielding gas significantly affects weld quality, penetration, spatter levels, and productivity .

Common shielding gas mixtures for carbon steel :

  • 75% Argon / 25% CO₂ – Most common in the US; excellent for short-circuit transfer on mild steel; good energy input for out-of-position welding .
  • 90% Argon / 10% CO₂ – Popular for spray transfer; lower spatter; good for manufacturing and automotive applications .
  • 100% CO₂ – Economical; deep penetration; but produces more spatter and fumes .

For stainless steel or aluminum, inert gases like 100% Argon or Argon-Helium mixtures are typically used .

Equipment Components

A typical GMAW setup includes :

  1. Power source – Usually constant-voltage (CV) type for stable arc characteristics.
  2. Wire feeder – Drives the electrode wire at a constant speed.
  3. Welding gun – Conducts current, guides the wire, and delivers shielding gas.
  4. Shielding gas supply – Cylinder with regulator and flow meter.
  5. Ground clamp – Completes the electrical circuit.
