1. Market Size and Growth
The market is experiencing rapid growth. With the fast-paced development of the new energy vehicle (NEV) market, demand for new energy drive motors is surging significantly. By 2025, the market space for drive motors in China’s new energy passenger vehicles is expected to reach RMB 38.5 billion. The NEV motor industry has attracted considerable participation and investment from numerous enterprises, leading to increasingly fierce market competition.
2. Mainstream Motor Types
2.1 Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM)
Leveraging advantages such as high power density, high operating efficiency, compact and simple structure, smooth and high torque output, and excellent speed regulation performance, permanent magnet synchronous motors have become the absolute mainstream in China’s domestic NEV drive motor market. In 2021, their installation share reached as high as 94%.
2.2 AC Asynchronous Motors (Induction Motors)
Some automotive manufacturers adopt this motor type, including certain models from Tesla and NIO. Although this motor type has lower energy conversion efficiency, it does not suffer from demagnetization issues. It allows for extended peak power, rated power, and peak power operating durations, and features relatively higher rotational speeds, making it suitable for driving conditions such as high-speed cruising.
3. Technological Development Trends
3.1 Hairpin/Winding Wire Motor Technology
Compared to traditional round-wire motors, hairpin (flat-wire) motors offer several advantages, including higher bare copper slot fill factor, lower total copper loss, higher efficiency, greater power density, lower electromagnetic noise, shorter end windings, and better heat dissipation. Hairpin-wire technology demonstrates overwhelmingly superior technical advantages over traditional round-wire technology. Currently, the replacement of round-wire motors with hairpin-wire motors in NEV applications is accelerating.
3.2 Oil-Cooling Technology
Cooling oil can come into direct contact with the motor’s heat-generating components, providing significantly higher heat dissipation efficiency than traditional water-cooling systems. Additionally, oil as a cooling medium offers advantages such as good insulation properties, high dielectric constant, low freezing point, and high boiling point. This technology enhances motor power density and reliability. Some NEV drive motors have already adopted direct-injection rotor oil-cooling technology.
3.3 Multi-in-One Electric Drive Systems
This approach integrates components such as the motor, reducer, and controller, while sharing parts like housings and wiring harnesses, achieving integration, cost reduction, and lightweighting. Such integrated designs improve system efficiency and reliability while reducing the vehicle’s overall space occupation.
